MSN Messenger
From Protocolinfo
MSN Messenger is Microsoft's instant messenger. In 2006, it was renamed Windows Live Messenger. The protocol it uses is called the Microsoft Notification Protocol (MSNP). Only unofficial documentation of this protocol is available, for instance at hypothetic.org or the msnfanatic wiki.
[edit] Identification
[edit] l7-filter
l7-filter uses two patterns: msnmessenger and msn-filetransfer. The first matches the instant messenging itself and some file transfers, including those used in Windows Live Messenger 8.0 (awaiting verification). File transfers that are matched by the "msnmessenger" pattern cannot be distingished by l7-filter from chat traffic, since they use the same TCP connection. The "msn-filetransfer" pattern matches the remaining types of file transfers. These patterns have been tested with Gaim 1.5.0, MSN Messenger 7.0 and Windows Live Messenger 8.0.
